Magician Space is proud to present Liang Wei’s solo exhibition “One, and the Same.” Marking the artist’s third solo presentation at the gallery, her most recent works explore ambiguous boundaries between lines and forms.

Looking at Liang Wei’s paintings, one might rightfully categorize them as an abstraction. Still, more often than not, they quickly overturn this preconception because the incredibly intricate images appear very graphic under the abstract outline. Her approach is not to simplify complexity but instead transforming it into minimal forms. This subtle sophistication in Liang Wei’s work – the images construct a common visual experience, putting us amid a boundless illusion that seems familiar and immersive.

Liang Wei shifts from “line to shape” with her years of visual and technical experiences and begins to apply richer colors to fill the space between lines. The specific reference of the image continues to dissolve; eventually, the work on canvas becomes an intriguing image of the unconscious: like a narrow stream, flowing calmly from the center of the picture to the surroundings, or like a silent burst, surging out from the deep core. While Liang pays more attention to integrate color in this process, she connects and generates structure in a recognizable visual relationship. The seemingly seamless hybridization of organic and non-organic elements in the images suggests renewal and regeneration by the intensity of color. Liang Wei constantly dismantles and reassembles the complete images she observes to allow the viewer to leave behind all preconceived notions and cultural contexts. So, one may experience feelings inspired by reality rather than its representations, engendering one’s own “image” or arriving at its core in a poetic structure of perception that is plausible yet unreal.

In Liang Wei’s work, she often studies her everyday visual experience and transposes it to the canvas for her creative practice. At this time, she focuses more on integrating external information to confront her inner needs rather than using the outside world to reflect on and refresh her perception and understanding. The line can be as simple as outlines and tracings, and it can also become an infinite, surreal, ethereal expression. For Liang Wei, the works on canvas constructed by lines, shapes, and colors are also a mirror image of her inner thoughts, and only by facing her heart and mind completely can she address the so-called problems of painting. Liang Wei reveals that she has to mobilize all her emotions during the painting process, like a magnet that holds the images in her mind together. Sometimes she even senses a kind of redundant expression in her imagery, which she can neither hold back nor reduce a single bit.
